Views 3 mit YQL

Interessante Präsentation von Johan Falk was mit Views 3 möglich ist, wo nicht nicht mehr nur die Drupal DB abgefragt werden kann, sondern auch andere Quellen, wie eben YQL.

This presentation shows four practical examples of how you can use YQL data on your Drupal site

• To display feeds of tweets mentioning a selected user
• To display top five Google-pages linking to the current page (or a specified URL)
• To search Flickr using node tags or a custom string, displaying returned images in a slideshow
• To create semi-unique Twitter tags for each node, using Twitter as comment engine

Views 3 + YQL

Now, the ability in Views 3 to handle data outside your regular database opens the posibillity to use all these cool stuff on whatever data you can get your hands on. One ginormous pile of data comes from the Yahoo! Datatables project, that provides data not only from Yahoo! itself but also from a wide variety of external sorces – Mediawiki, Facebook, Twitter, Google, IMDB and what-not.

Christian Heilmann erklärt – mal wieder – YQL und geht dabei auf einige nette Sachen wie executable block inside open tables ein.

Combining open systems like YQL and Google Docs, and some knowledge of XML and JavaScript, you can offer a web service to people in a matter of minutes. In any case, moving your development from accessing local files and databases to accessing services makes it much more versatile and allows you to switch providers any time in the future. With YQL, you can dip your toes into the water of web services without drowning as most of the tough work has already been done for you.
