Spannendes Projekt der Washington Post: Top Secret America:

These are some of the findings of a two-year investigation by The Washington Post that discovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America hidden from public view and lacking in thorough oversight. After nine years of unprecedented spending and growth, the result is that the system put in place to keep the United States safe is so massive that its effectiveness is impossible to determine.

The investigation’s other findings include:

• Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States.
• An estimated 854,000 people, nearly 1.5 times as many people as live in Washington, D.C., hold top-secret security clearances.
• In Washington and the surrounding area, 33 building complexes for top-secret intelligence work are under construction or have been built since September 2001. Together they occupy the equivalent of almost three Pentagons or 22 U.S. Capitol buildings - about 17 million square feet of space.

Americans enjoy no “reasonable expectation of privacy”

Automated Biometric Identification System

Wieviel Biometrische Systeme taugen, und welche Konsequenzen ein Eintrag in entsprechende Datenbanken haben kann, zeigt dieser Bericht über das Automated Biometric Identification System (DOD ABIS) in Afghanistan.

Leutnant Todd Vician, ein Pentagon-Sprecher, räumte ein, dass die beiden angeblichen Aufständischen deswegen so bezeichnet wurden, weil sich ihre Daten im ABIS-System befinden. Und er musste zugeben, dass dies eigentlich nicht viel bedeutet, weil auch die Daten von Zivilisten aus irgendwelchen Gründen in die Datenbank gelangen können. Er gab auch zu, dass die vier Toten nicht bewaffnet waren. So schnell wird man also ein Aufständischer, was dann auch gleichzeitig die Soldaten entlastet.

Der US-Armee mißfällt Wikileaks

Wikileaks hat ein Dokument des Counterintelligence Center der US-Armee (ACIC) aus dem Jahre 2008 veröffentlicht aus dem hervorgeht mit welchen Methoden man dort gegen Wikileaks vorgehen will.

Zur Schwächung der Position von Wikileaks empfiehlt der ACIC-Report eine Reihe von Maßnahmen, die die Glaubwürdigkeit des Angebots erschüttern sollen, etwa fehlerhafte Dokumente zu lancieren oder die Drohung, dass Informanten leicht enttarnt werden können. Im Kern müsse es darum gehen, das Vertrauen in Wikileaks zu zerstören. Wikileaks weist in einer Mitteilung darauf hin, dass der Plan offenbar noch nicht aufgegangen sei. Bislang sei kein einziger Whistleblower aus dem militärischen Umfeld enttarnt worden.

Sprint Nextel operates what it calls the L-Site, also known as the “legal compliance secure Web portal.” The company even has offered a course that “will teach you how to create and track legal demands through L-site. Learn to navigate and securely download requested records.” Cox Communications makes its price list for complying with police requests public; a 30-day wiretap is $3,500.
