FBI’s new Next Generation Identification (NGI) system

The FBI intends to go nationwide with a facial recognition service; testing will begin in Michigan, Washington, Florida and North Carolina by the middle of January 2012. By 2014, this new face search tool will be available to criminal justice professionals nationwide.

The FBI reported that NGI capabilities include:

• Quality Check Automation with “faster response times and more consistent processing decisions” in regard to fingerprint processing.
• Interstate Photo System Enhancements with facial recognition capabilities and “the ability to accept and search for photographs of scars, marks, and tattoos.”
• Disposition Reporting Improvements with more options aimed at increasing electronic submissions of “disposition data.”
• Advanced Fingerprint Identification Technology
• Enhanced IAFIS Repository involving an “Iris Repository: This repository will provide the submission of Iris data, provide retrieval capability, provide Iris search capability, and provide Iris maintenance capability.”

Dem FBI sind einige Dokumente abhanden gekommen.

Taken as a whole, the secret FBI file shows the willful disregard for the rights of anti-war and international solidarity activists – particularly the first amendment rights to freedom of speech and association. The documents make it clear that legal activity in solidarity with the peoples of Colombia and Palestine is being targeted. The documents use McCarthy-era language, which gives one the feel that the 1950s red scare has returned. And finally, the documents show the chilling plans for the armed raid that took place at the home of Kelly and Gawboy on September 24, 2010.

Computer and Internet Protocol Address Verifier

Die EFF veröffentlicht Dokumente über das FBI Tool “Computer and Internet Protocol Address Verifier” (CIPAV).

CIPAV collects the following information:
IP Address, Media Access Control (MAC) address, “Browser environment variables”, Open communication ports, List of the programs running, Operating system type / version and serial number, Browser type and version, Language encoding, The URL that the target computer was previously connected to, Registered computer name, Registered company name, Currently logged in user name, Other information that would assist with “identifying computer users, computer software installed, [and] computer hardware installed”

Bei Wired liest man:

In the Josh Glazebrook case, the FBI sent its program specifically to Glazebrook’s then-anonymous MySpace profile, Timberlinebombinfo.(…) Since there’s no evidence the CIPAV was crafted specifically to target MySpace, my money is on a browser or plug-in hole, activated through the web-based stored messaging system, which allows one MySpace user to send a message to another’s inbox. The message can include HTML and embedded image tags.

heise berichtet über eine Dokumente die die Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) kürzlich veröffentlicht hat:

Die als “Computer and Internet Protocol Address Verifier” (CIPAV) bezeichnete Software des FBI sei “in Fällen im ganzen Land” zum Einsatz gekommen, folgert die Vereinigung aus den Schreiben, die sie nach einer Anfrage auf Basis des US-amerikanischen Informationsfreiheitsgesetzes (Freedom of Information Act) von 2007 erhalten hat. (…) Der CIPAV ermittelt und versendet unter anderem IP-Nummern, die MAC-Adresse, die offenen Ports, die laufenden Programme, Daten der Windows-Version und den bei der Registrierung angegebenen Namen.
