U.S. enables Chinese hacking of Google

Bruce Schneier hebt einen wichtigen Punkt in der Debatte über chinesische Einbrüche in Google Account hervor:

This problem isn’t going away. Every year brings more Internet censorship and control, not just in countries like China and Iran but in the U.S., the U.K., Canada and other free countries, egged on by both law enforcement trying to catch terrorists, child pornographers and other criminals and by media companies trying to stop file sharers.

The problem is that such control makes us all less safe. Whether the eavesdroppers are the good guys or the bad guys, these systems put us all at greater risk. Communications systems that have no inherent eavesdropping capabilities are more secure than systems with those capabilities built in. And it’s bad civic hygiene to build technologies that could someday be used to facilitate a police state.

Software zum Abhören von Funktastaturen

Ich habe den Sinn von Funktastaturen ja noch nie verstanden, und nun gibt es auch ein Argument gegen die Dinger aus Sicherheitsgründen:

Max Moser und Thorsten Schröder von Dreamlab haben rund anderthalb Jahre nach ihrer Veröffentlichung, Microsofts Verschlüsselung von Funktastaturen geknackt zu haben, die frei verfügbare Software Keykeriki sowie Unterlagen zum Nachbau der Hardware (Schaltplan und Platinenlayout im Eagle-Format) veröffentlicht.

A service called World Tracker lets you use data from cell phone towers and GPS systems to pinpoint anyone’s exact whereabouts, any time — as long as they’ve got their phone on them.

Zum Zuhören gäbe es Flexispy

The service promises to let you “catch cheating wives or cheating husbands” and even “bug meeting rooms.” Its tools use a phone’s microphone to let you hear essentially any conversations within earshot.

Der Artikel kommt zu dem bedenklichen Fazit:

Finding spyware on your phone isn’t easy. There are dozens of bug detectors available from surveillance companies, but the only true fix is taking your phone to your provider and having them wipe it out altogether. That will restore the factory settings and clear out any hidden software that’s running on your phone.

Lidlisierung des Rechts nennt Heribert Prantl das BKA-Gesetz.

Soll es wirklich erlaubt sein, dass geheime Lausch- und Spähaktionen nicht erst bei einem konkreten Verdacht, auch nicht erst im Vorfeld eines konkreten Verdachts, sondern künftig schon im Vorfeld einer bloßen Vorbereitungshandlung veranstaltet werden?

Das höchste Gericht hat sehr penible Regelungen zum Schutz des Kernbereichs der Privatheit gefordert. In Paragraph 20k, Absatz 7 des neuen Gesetzes kann man den Eindruck haben, dass sich die Minister Schäuble und Zypries darüber lustig machen.

Risiken der Überwachung

Sehr interessantes Papier: Risking Communications Security: Potential Hazards of the ‘Protect America Act’ (pdf 92kb) - und sei es nur um ein wenig besser die technischen Probleme der Überwachungsmaßnahmen zu verstehen.

In this paper we discuss potential risks in building a surveillance system to satisfy the Protect America Act. We provide background on FISA, and then discuss a likely surveillance architecture. We next discuss Call Detail Records and determining location of international Internet traffic.

We see three serious security risks that have not been adequately addressed (or perhaps not even addressed at all): the danger that the system can be exploited by unauthorized users, the danger of criminal misuse by a trusted insider, and the danger of misuse by the U.S. government.
