Wie die Times nun im Artikel Government will spy on every call and e-mail berichtet, sollen für die Datenbank und noch viel mehr 12 Milliarden £ bereitgestellt werden, von denen bereits 1 Milliarde £ investiert wurden. (…) Die weiteren Stufen des Überwachungsprojekts sehen vor, dass – wie in der Vergangenheit gewünscht – Hunderte staatlich kontrollierter Überwachungsschnittstellen direkt in die Netze aller größeren ITK-Providern installiert werden, zuallererst bei der British Telecom und Vodafone, damit sich die GCHQ und der MI5 landesweit jederzeit live zum Abfangen und Abhören einklinken können. Da sind Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) Techniken, Phorm Cookies und die Vorratsdatenspeicherung nur nützliche Dreingaben.

Procera Networks will announce today a new standard in deep packet inspection (DPI) gear: an 80Gbps monster called the PacketLogic PL10000 that is targeted at tier-1 network operators. At up to $800,000 a unit, these aren’t cheap, but when you want to throttle, inspect, and shape traffic in real-time on a major network, this is now the fastest thing on the market (and by a large margin).

Deep Packet Inspection

Ralf Bendrath berichtet über ein interessantes Forschungsprojekt an der TU Delft über Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) an dem er auch beteiligt ist.

Technological advances in routers and network monitoring equipment now allow Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to monitor the content of TCP/IP packets in real-time and make decisions accordingly about how to handle them. If rolled out widely, this technology known as deep packet inspection (DPI) would turn the internet into something completely new. Lawrence Lessig almost ten years ago reminded us that its design is not a natural given, but the outcome of political and technological decisions and trends. DPI therefore has the potential to affect the fundamental properties of the internet as a global public infrastructure and therefore also to alter the capacity of global internet governance.
