Free Advanced CakePHP E-Book

What exactly is this thing and why should I waste my precious bowl time reading it?
At the moment there is no lack of CakePHP books geared towards beginners. But, there really isn’t much for anyone who has mastered the basics and wants to do more. This e-book is for you guys and gal (I’m sure there’s at least one out there somewhere).

Simply, symfony did what I expected, and it seemed to know what Model helper methods I would need. It certainly is more complicated than Cake, but the complications are, for me, well worth it.

I’m left with the feeling that Cake does the simple things very very well, and the difficult things are not obvious. With symfony, the simple things are a little more complicated, but that makes the difficult things much easier and logical.

There are hundreds of PHP Content Management Systems. Why would a decently earning freelancer, hacking WordPress to fit any clients need decide to write one from scratch? The reason is CakePHP. When I picked up CakePHP it was a little revolution. The quality of my apps got better, I growed a lot as a coder thanks to it and I did stuff faster. But when the time to build a relative simple client site came, I always resorted to WordPress. You know the classic requirements: content managed pages, some news section. Every client also throws something specific into the mix, like a booking form, availability calendar a page pulling RSS from somewhere… I always had a hard time coming back from happy baking to plugin fixing and hacking together procedural PHP. Don’t get me wrong, WordPress is great and it has and will have it’s huge user base. But we Cakers know better, don’t we?

So what does a programmer do when he’s not comfortable with the tool he uses? He programs a new one. It’s slightly more than a year that I started a project called Wildflower. The tag line is A CakePHP CMS.

CakePHP Screencasts

Installing and Setting Up CakePHP (mov 35,3mb): Covers how to get Cake working on your localhost.

Running Cake Outside Root (mov): Explains how to better secure your Cake application by placing key directories outside the server root, and how to configure the application to work properly.

Using Scaffolding and Bake (mov 82,3mb: Walks you through how to use Cake’s scaffold feature as well as configuring and using the Bake script to dynamically generate controllers and views.
