The world created by the design and deployment of novel technologies is one of our choosing. The different paths that technological development could take result in quite different societies, some more welcome than others.
Therefore technological development needs to be steered along the preferred path - what that path should be, which scenario we prefer and how technological development can be influenced are matters that need extended debate.
